History, Philosophy and Culture of Science (HPS+) an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum

History, Philosophy and Culture of Science (HPS+) is a four-semester programme leading to the degree MA ("Master of Arts"). HPS+ focuses on the reflection of science in theoretical, historical and socio-cultural terms as well as with respect to its logical-rational foundations and formal methods and tools. Compared to previous HPS programmes in Germany and abroad, HPS+ is characterised by its integrative structure, since it includes logic as well as cultural and social science sub-disciplines in the curriculum. Based on this diversity, the students of HPS+ are trained to become "bridge builders" between the humanities and the natural or computer sciences. They are enabled to understand the challenges of contemporary knowledge-based societies in their complexity and to reflect them normatively and with analytical precision. The nine participating faculties and a large number of institutes create a teaching program that is probably unique in its diversity and interdisciplinarity.

HPS+ can be studied by all BA graduates in the humanities and social sciences as well as STEM subjects. HPS+ is also characterized by its international orientation; through cooperation with partner programs, optional research-oriented stays abroad (e.g. Utrecht, Vienna, Mexico City) can be implemented as part of a research module in the third semester. The program can be started in winter and summer. There are no admission restrictions, but a 5-page motivational essay is submitted with the application. Applications can be submitted by e-mail (by March 15 for the summer semester and by September 15 for the winter semester). All further information for the application can be found on the HPS+ homepage.

Studenverlauf

HPS+ is a two-year programme. The first year of the study programme focuses on the extension and consolidation of philosophical, historical and cultural knowledge of the sciences and the humanities as well as knowledge of formal logic and history of logic. Different course prerequisites are balanced. Students are enabled to broaden their previous knowledge and gain new basic skills.

The second year provides opportunities for indepth studies and specialisation. Students extend their gained knowledge and enhance their competence in various methods of HPS or Logic. They can either follow their own main research (at RUB or abroad) or conduct an application-oriented project in a work experience (e.g. an internship). Thereby students learn how to acquire on their own new knowledge and skills.

Karriere

Alumni of this programme can be characterized, on the one hand, by their ability to understand and classify science-oriented circumstances in a reflective manner. On the other hand they are knowledgeable of formal logic and know how to handle logical-analytic approaches and central concepts of the Humanities and Social Studies. With this combination they can act as "bridge-builder" between the Humanities and Sciences. Based on the subject of the study - HPS+ alumni qualify for professional fields in which the collaboration of Sciences and the Humanities is needed and in which the occupation and the reflexion of the consequences of scientific knowledge in culture and society play a central role.

Possible fields of employment are science research (e.g. at universities), science management and the promotion of knowledge (e.g. at foundations and public trusts and institutions), science communication (e.g. at publishing houses and journals), science mediation (e.g. at museums), science-political consultancy and consultancy in ethical issues of science as well as in public relations departments of companies specialized in technology and natural sciences. With a focus on logic, students will qualify for employment in areas with a focus on computer science, knowledge representation and data analysis/processing
