Nanotechnology at the Friedrich-Alexander Univerity Erlangen-Nürnberg

The 4 semester master’s degree program Nanotechnology at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg allows you to deepen and enhance the basic knowledge you acquired during you bachelor studies in Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Physics or a related subject.  

The first two semesters are dedicated to five compulsory nanotechnological modules in which you approach nanotechnological questions from different perspectives (e.g., top-down or bottom-up). 

Nanotechnological compulsory modules:

• Nanocharacterization
• Synthesis / characterization
• Computational Nanoscience
• Top-down nanostructuring
• Bottom-up nano-synthesis / Self-assembly

In addition, you are to choose a core subject from within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering as well as two electives from the entire master’s course catalogue of the School of Engineering and the School of Science.

The following core subjects can be selected:

• General Material properties
• Materials science / Technology of metals
• Glass and ceramics
• Corrosion and surfaces
• Polymer materials
• Materials used in electronics and energy technology
• Material simulation
• Micro and nano structure research

Your nanotechnological expertise is deepened in the compulsory modules, whereas the core and elective modules enable you to follow your individual interests.

The third semester is the ideal time for you to go and study abroad. The respective modules (soft skills, scientific project) can easily be accomplished in another university. The program concludes with the master’s thesis and a subsequent oral presentation. Type and duration of the exams as well as the study plan can be found in the examination regulations.

Nanotechnogists from Erlangen can take on many interesting activities in the areas of research and development, production, quality assurance, technical sales, and management. Important industrial sectors include the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry, energy and environmental technology, chemical industry, microelectronics, medical technology, and environmental protection.
